1. General Information about the department:
Department of Microbiology started in the year 2006 provides academic, research and diagnostic facilities in field of Microbiology.
Infrastructure: Our department has got equipped with infrastructure as per NMC guidelines. Department got equipped service laboratories for bacteriology, serology, mycology, parasitology, virology and immunology along with central laboratory. For teaching purposes, our department has got equipped demonstration rooms, lecture halls, practical hall, departmental library, museum and a research lab for students.
Our Department provides teaching facilities to MBBS students, Nursing Students, DMLT, DOTT students since 2006. Since 2014 our department was recognized for PG (MD, Microbiology) admission by MCI. Our department is looking after Central research laboratory of our institute as well.
We provide microbiology investigation facilities in bacteriology, serology, mycology, parasitology in our departmental and as well as central laboratory in HIMS teaching hospital. Our department actively participates in national programmes like RNTCP, malaria eradication programme, NACO, etc Our department housing IDSP referral laboratory under Integrated disease surveillance programme since 2011 and VRDL laboratory recognized by Department of Health Research (DHR) since 2016 .
VRDL lab situated in our department is involved in diagnosis and research in field of virology. Our VRDL lab is authorized by central government and ICMR for diagnosis of Arbovirus, Influenza virus and Covid – 19 virus infections. Centre is also recognized and nodal centre for Measles Rubella programme by WHO. VRDL managed by MD, Microbiologist and equipped with advanced equipments for serological and molecular biological tests.
IDSP referral lab functioning in our department is providing services to 3 districts – Hassan , Mangalore and Kodagu. Lab is managed by MD, Microbiologist as nodal officer along with 2 laboratory technicians. Lab is involved in infection out break surveillance and proficiency testing of district laboratories.
Department of Microbiology is also involved in many patient care and infection control activities like monitoring of central sterile supply department, hospital infection control committee activities and antibiotic stewardship programme. Our department is also actively participating in quality improvement activities such as Kayakalp programme, NQAS certification programme, NABH / NABL accreditation programme.
Department Standards/Practice ; Academic activities in the department are as per National Medical Council and RGUHS guidelines. The laboratories operate as per standards of organizations such as Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute CLSI / WHO / ICMR / NCDC / NACO / NABL . Our department strictly adheres to internal quality control programme. WE have enrolled for EQAS with CMC, Vellore / NIV, Pune and NCDC, New Dehli. Departmental policies, processes and procedures are developed based on needs revealed by patient demographics, advances in the industry, changes in regulations, inspection reports, and deficiencies or inadequacies identified in current processes.
